A Special Spot on the Cover: Connor’s Waterfowl Tradition

For Connor D. who is in 5th grade, some of his favorite memories begin before the sun comes up.
For nearly seven years, Connor has joined his dad, Joe, for waterfowl hunting. Their mornings often start at 4 or 5 a.m., heading out into the early morning darkness with their Labrador Retriever, Sonny, by their side. Connor loves every part of it, and he says that Sonny does too.
This year, their family tradition led to an especially exciting moment: Connor, Joe and Sonny are featured on the cover of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s 2026–2027 Official Guide to Hunting & Trapping Laws & Regulations.
The photograph, taken in Chenango County by Daniel C., captures Connor and Joe with two ducks after a hunt, with Sonny proudly standing alongside them.
The guide includes a special caption from Joe that perfectly describes what these mornings mean to their family:
“My son and dog have a passion like no other for waterfowl season. It's the greatest feeling to be able to watch these two grow with every season.”
Having Connor and his dad and Sonny featured on the cover of a statewide publication is an incredible milestone for a tradition that began when Connor was much younger. But beyond the photograph and the recognition, it's the time spent together that makes these early mornings so meaningful.
Seven years of chilly mornings, early alarms, time in the outdoors and memories with Dad and Sonny have created a tradition that Connor loves. For him October 10th can’t come fast enough, (opening day of duck season), so that he can get back out there.
We are proud to celebrate Connor and this special family tradition!
